Boiler Scrappage Scheme Planned to Improve UK Home Efficiency
Alistair Darling has this week unveiled plans to provide up to £400 for inefficient boilers when a household purchases a newer, more efficient one.
This initiative is just one of many unveiled in Mr. Darlings’ pre-budget report. The ‘Supporting Low Carbon Growth’ chapter attempts to meet the targets set to dramatically reduce carbon emissions by the year 2012.
“Building on our successful car scrappage scheme, I will help up to 125,000 homes replace the most inefficient boilers with new models.” Mr Darling said in the Pre-Budget Report statement to the House of Commons today.
According to Mr. Darling this will prevent around 125,000 tonnes of carbon from being released into the atmosphere and save each household around £200 per year.
The scheme will come on top of the Warm Front system which has already helped around 235,000 households to become more efficient by providing financial help for insulation and efficient heating systems.
The report also lists several other commitments to UK energy efficiency including further promise of funding to wind energy projects throughout the UK, support for capture and storage projects and the tax free sale of energy generated through the upcoming clean energy cash-back scheme.

The £400 vouchers can also go towards a solar hot water system: if it’s an advanced one, the combination of this and an energy efficient boiler should be a winning one in terms of supplying a household’s hot water requirements for most of the year without reliance on fossil fuels.
