Green Refurbishment Moves up the Agenda
The Existing Homes Alliance has this week called for more concerted effort to be put into reducing the carbon emissions of Britain’s 26 million existing homes.
The Alliance (a coalition of governmental agencies, housing and environmental organizations and businesses, chaired by WWF-UK), is campaigning for an overhaul to the stamp duty and council tax systems as well as VAT reforms on refurbishment and the introduction of energy service packages.
The coalition is also backing a number of other green projects including the introduction of low-energy refurbishments, ‘trusted installer’ registers, compulsory training for building industry professionals in new energy efficient techniques and a high-profile campaign to educate the public about the environmental impact of their way of life.
WWF-UK Homes Campaign Manager, Simon McWhirter said, “WWF welcomes any initiative that will further public understanding of the impact our homes have on the environment.”
He added, “There still remains a huge gap in the provision of financial incentives and support to enable homeowners to install these measures.”
The British public is now faced with an uncomfortable truth: unless homeowners begin to make some more environmentally friendly lifestyle choices, the UK will fall dramatically behind on its long-term forecasted targets to cut energy emissions. To tackle this, the Alliance is calling for the refurbishment of up to half a million homes a year beginning immediately.
Greenworks will continue to provide the most up-to-date energy-efficient technology for UK homeowners. Our products and services will help to minimise the impact human activities have on our planet.
